Holistic health reasons to avoid plastic bottles

In recent months, the safety of plastic bottles has been seriously questioned, mainly due to the presence of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in plastics. BPA was invented more than a hundred years and is used to create hard plastic bottles, food can linings, metal and canned baby formula. Despite claims that the manufacture of BPA is safe in the last twenty years, studies have shown that this chemical is a dangerous pollutant to the human body and is in a large percentage of the population.

The National Toxicology Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), reported in April 2008 that BPA is toxic and may be associated with puberty early, prostate problems, breast cancer, behavioral problems, the effects of hormonal side effects and adverse development. Potentially pregnant women and children are most vulnerable to the risks of BPA. This has inspired retailers like Wal-Mart to withdraw products containing BPA from store shelves and Congress to investigate. In the future, we hope that the FDA will enforce stricter safety standards.

Protect Your Family: Natural Health Tips to reduce exposure BPA

The total elimination of BPA in the environment can not be achieved overnight, but there are ways to limit exposure. Here are some tips:

Cans Council 1 – are often coated with plastics containing BPA. Drinks generally have less waste than canned soups and pasta.

Tip 2 – Some plastics Leach BPA in food and liquids. Plastic bottles and food packaging have lower levels of leaching from cans preserves and milk.

Tip 3 – food containers and polycarbonate plastic bottles can be affected by residual amounts of BPA. These containers are often marked with the letters "PC" and the # 7 recycling label on the bottom. Keep an eye on these indicators on the bottles, water bottles, plastic cups and any plastic object used for food storage and avoid them.

Tip 4 – containers, bottles and cups with labels Recycle 1, 2 and 4 are no longer safe and BPA free.

Tip 5 – Avoid using plastic containers to heat food in the microwave or old, scratched containers.

In addition to these tips, it is also useful to know that plastic wrap Saran has promised to BPA and Nalgene has recently announced would eliminate water bottles containing BPA. They promised to produce BPA-free, hard, water bottles, plastic only.
